Kids Helping Kids: Students in New York Raise Awareness and Funds for Earthquake Victims in Chile

By Alison Inceu
On April 23rd, a team of students from Latham, New York organized “The New Global Cinema” to raise awareness about the work of EPES in response to the earthquake, as well as funds for the purchase of “Comfort Kits” for children participating in the “Comfort 4 Kids” program in Concepcion. The students attend Shaker High School, a school of approximately 2,000 students located in the suburbs of Albany, NY. The team is part of the American organization New Global Citizens. The organization partners student groups across the country with grassroots organizations abroad that are responding to local problems related to the Millennium Development Goals.

The Shaker New Global Citizens team typically educates, advocates, and fundraises on the behalf of the street children of Belgrade, Serbia. On this occasion, however, the group organized a Chilean themed “Cinema” for EPES, at which food and crafts were sold prior to a showing of the recent movie, “Where the Wild Things Are.” The students distributed EPES fliers and informed attendees about the work of EPES, the February 27th earthquake, and the effect of the earthquake on Chile’s children. Action for Health in the Americas treasurer Carol Larkin also spoke at the event. When asked why they wanted to organize this event for EPES, the team members expressed feeling that people are unaware of the effect of the earthquake in Chile, especially on the children. Too many people, they said, believe Chile to be developed enough that it does not need any help. As kids, it makes sense for us to try and help other kids suffering in Chile.

Visiting Talcahuano
Yesterday afternoon, we drove through one of the worst hit areas, the Chilean port city Talcahuano, which is just miles from Hualpen where EPES is located. We stood and wept at the devastation. It is completely overwhelming".

The earthquake, coupled with a massive tsunami, completely ruined the port and all of the downtown area in Chilean port city, Talcahuano.
Soldiers stand watch over the area. A swamped fishing boat lies in the street.   Cargo and refuse lay about after the tsunami hit, a 2.5 meter (7.5 feet) wave.

EPES provides of Water to the community
Within 24 hours of the earthquake, EPES Concepcion director Dr. Lautaro Lopez had communicated with local authoritiesand alerted them to the water source on EPES' property. For the past 9 days, EPES has been providing water to 300 families (1200 people) in the community. For the first few days, the pump was run with a generator that the local municipality brought back and forth to EPES. Our support team from Santiago bought a generator and brought it to EPES. Now, the electricity has been restored and we are using the electricity from EPES. Although the first few days were very tense as people were panicking about the lack of water, food and other basic necessities, within days Lautaro had organized a local committee to run the water distribution. Patricia stands at the gate from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. giving out numbers and letting people in and Marcos, Isi and Carolina sit at the pump and fill bowls, bottles and pails with water.

At 6 a.m., neighbors start lining up to get a number for water. Here are people waiting outside the gate for their turn to come.   Patricia standing at the gate giving out numbers --over 300 numbers are given out daily.   Marcos, Isi and Carolina filling up pails, bottles and bowls.
